The responsibility of the Committee on Preparation for Ministry provides oversight, care and supervision of Inquirers and Candidates for the ministry, as such they exist in fulfillment of the Book of Order G-14.0300.

The Chair of the Unit, or representative designated by the Unit, serves on the Coordinating Council.

The responsibilities of this Support Unit include:
o Fulfilling all of the duties assigned in the Book of Order G-14.0300;
o Instructing Sessions of their role in the Inquirer and Candidate process; and
giving particular direction to those sessions that have endorsed an Inquirer or
Candidate;
o Requiring the Inquirer or Candidate to make an annual written report
concerning progress in studies and service to the church, including a report from
the individual's institution of learning;
o Conducting an annual consultation with Inquirers and Candidates, and
deciding as to whether the individual should be continued or terminated as an
Inquirer or as a Candidate, and recommending removal to presbytery;
o Providing support and nurture to Inquirers and Candidates; and performing a
final assessment of the Candidate's readiness in all respects to receive a call,
presenting a summary of this assessment to presbytery, and upon request
ending it to a calling presbytery.
o Participating at Committee on Ministry examinations as non-voting members
when Candidates being examined are under care of the Presbytery of Middle
Tennessee.
